Art is not charity
I am sitting in a little cafe in the Haight listening to some acoustic music and eating a vegan tofu veggie crêpe. It's very charming.
My short essay question, however, concerns an image that flashed across the projection behind the performers. It said: "Art is Charity." I feel this is not the case. In fact, I feel that art, at least what I consider to be art, is specifically oriented against the idea of "charity." Perhaps the author (sloganeer?) intends to imply that art is charitable rather than capitalistic ... but that still seems to miss the mark somewhat.
The music itself is somewhat varied. The first song was a paean to San Diego that had the chorus, "San Diego is a waffle of sand, with lots of syrup in my hand." I felt this was either far beneath me or far above my comprehension. However a subsequent song threw some things in in Spanish and, while I didn't understand it and therefore may simply be reacting to the exoticism, I felt it was a more worthwhile song.
